I have been sort of upset lately at my lack of social life, and how few people I have in my small circle of friends that I spend time with (either in or out of work). And today, over lunch with an old friend, I got into a pretty passionate explanation over why I am not-really-such-great-friends with some people, anymore ... and realized (finally) that I am alright with the people I spend time with, and the people I chose not to be around. Because, as much as it's nice to have an amount of people to have fun with, it's also nice to not be used by them. In addition, it's also nice to not feel like I have to hold myself back for them, or feel like I'm constantly being lied to, or feel like I have to pretend failure after failure of overall character with mostly no expenditure of any sort of effort on their part to reduce (at least the severity of) these failures is acceptable to me. When it's not; when I'd rather just spend time with people I have nerding it the hell up with my in my science classes, or on my councils, or at work. Quality over quantity, if you will. Like J and I talked about, it's nice to be "palling around" with people who have respect for themselves for at least a few hours of the day ... and not respect that they fashion out of a psychedelic mushroom trip, or delusional misrepresentation of the past, or outright denial of overall personal attributes.

I also hate phonies.

Signed,
Sarah Caulfield

(Oh yeah, next semester I'm going to take a creative writing class, and I'm also getting pretty annoyed with the media's portrayal of McCain [although I'm not planning on voting for him, I don't think many of the attacks are fair on his part ((not even Obama's attacks on him, I'm sayin' the media, especially involving the debates)) and I really wish there were such a MFin' bias in journalism; it's sickening really].)

Kelly and Joe - Santa Barbara Wedding Photography [08 Oct 2008|08:51pm]

doisneau
A couple weekends ago Ian and I had the honor of joining Kelly and Joe Kaufman on their first day as husband and wife. They chose Crossroads, part of Firestone Vineyard as their gorgeous location, and it was perfect for their intimate gathering. We were so excited to work with the fabulous Joy Proctor of Joy de Vivre, who provided coordination, and helped the day run seamlessly . Matt Armor of The All Occasion DJ kept guests on the dance floor all night. Guests traveled from as far as France to help the couple celebrate their wedding.

Kelly spent months putting together the details, from the luxurious letterpress place cards and menus to the parasols which shaded guests during the ceremony. Kelly took a floral arranging class so she could create the stunning centerpieces and bouquets. There was even an outdoor lounge area and fire pit where guests could go to watch the stars and roast marshmallows.

The event itself was incredibly touching, with Joe and Kelly reading their own vows. The ceremony ended with a kiss and the Jewish tradition of breaking the glass. Throughout the evening, the couple celebrated with a few more personal touches, including breaking of the bread and a song dedicated to Kelly. We got to sneak away for a few minutes to take some photos in the vineyard and take advantage of the tasty light and the newlyweds got to enjoy a few minutes to let things sink in. If you see the way Joe and Kelly look and each other, you know they will always take care of each other. Ian and I love our job, but sharing the day with a couple like this makes us even happier. -Tanya [our better writing half]

Okay, so liiiike [07 Oct 2008|12:29am]

my first Organic Chemistry test was today, and I studied a lot for it ... I mean, a lot. To the point where I could have done more, still, but I still studied A LOT.

I gota 46 on it.

Here's the great part.

You ready?

This was over five chapters, you see.

(I'm still not at the good part.)

The class is full of MAN I GOT THIS, I KNOW THIS SHIT, I'M DOMINATING THE F OUT OF THIS TEST a-holes.

Yeah okay so uh.

Class average was a 37.

Honestly. I know he grades on a bell curve, or a modified one or WHATEVER, but ... 37?! My pathetic 46 was almost 10 points above the class average. That's. Ridiculous.

So anyway, my deal is, now I don't know if I'm going to need to drop it or not. And, either way, I've already decided that even if I need to, I'm still not going to, because by magic luck I might get a C (and if by not magic luck, well, at least I'll know what's coming to ruin my life next semester when I have to do grade forgiveness).

That was my day.

This is my worst fear, that my husband will sleep with my twin sister if we were to ever divorce. This fear alone will ensure we never divorce.

I figured it out. Turns out I was deciphering my own secret. I'm going to get over my fear, I'm going to go for it.

A PostSecret Community teen recently shared in a forum she couldn't share her secrets as her Mom read her diary and knew her id on PSC. This reminded me how my mother read my diary and reminded me of a secret I had.

Since I had no outlet for expressing my anger, I would write my thoughts in acronyms. I knew exactly what I was saying, but no one else ever would. It was my secret way to let the anger out.

The interesting aspect of this is I would often go back to the writings and what I previously said would now be a mystery even to me. It was my secret yet I couldn't decipher it.

I KNEW IT!

This year a UK and Korean edition of the PostSecret book came out and there are official versions of the website in French, German, Spanish and Korean. This week on Frank's PostSecret Blog on MySpace I interview Brian Cotlove who runs PostSecretFrance.

Hi Brian, can you explain how you started PostSecretFrance?

Being a longtime fan of PostSecret, I always found the foreign language secrets to be the most interesting and appealing to me. I think it's incredible how secrets can cross cultural and language barriers with ease. So I combined my love of the French language and culture with my love of PostSecret, made this video in French and PostSecretFrance was born.

Can you share a postcard with us that has a personal meaning for you and explain why it is special to you?

My favorite secret that I have gotten so far is the simplest one. It's scrawled on a Post-It note and says, "I'm mailing this card because I have the feeling that I'm going to meet the person who will change my life on the way to the post office."

I'm actually kind of jealous of this person because they seem so unfailingly positive and confident. Yet at the same time this secret constantly reminds me how I am able to do just what this person did. I'm amazed every time I read it at how just a little Post-It note can make me feel.

What is a secret about yourself you have never shared before?

(Read the rest of this interview at Frank's PostSecret Blog on MySpace.)

The Today Show will be filming the Tuesday PostSecret Event at the University of Virginia (sold-out). Another PostSecret Event this week will be held at Vanderbilt University (sold-out).

there is a 75% chance i will live in chicago come the first week in november.

i'm warning you now so that when i actually move you will not be as devastated.

i start my masters program in a few weeks. not sure if i'll like grad school but i am hoping that a move and a masters will both work to my advantage.

i want to go on record and say that fall is by far my favorite season. i enjoy everything associated with the season to be honest. apple orchards, sweaters, football, and being able to hear the high school marching bands from my house rank at the top of my list.

what is on the bottom of my list you may ask?

girls wearing open toe shoes in freezing temperatures, the random days in the fall months that are winter-cold, people rubbing in the fact that they live/are moving to/are going on vacation to warm temperatures, and steven hawking.

i mean...quantum physics? really?

douche bag!

Beckie and Charles - Los Angeles Wedding Photography [01 Oct 2008|11:58pm]

doisneau
Last month I shot a darling couple's wedding photos over in a downtown LA artist studio. Beckie and Charles made a nice break from the traditional [which, nicely seems to be more of the norm lately] and had their ceremony out under the blue Los Angeles sky in the studio's backyard.

Everything came together beautifully as they transformed a wide open space into a gorgeous venue. I actually went to the space with Beckie about a month beforehand and was blown away with what they did with it. There was a lot of space to fill and everything came together gorgeously.

Now on to the photos -

Firestone Vineyard, Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez Wedding Photography

You might remember the preview we posted on Kelly and Joe's wedding [we're still working on their 'official' blog post with our favorite pics]. Well they were kind enough to post up a review on the great wedding forum site SantaBarbaraWedding.com. Take a read, you should have your wedding at Firestone and bring us along!

Here it is!

We (Kelly and Joe) were married September 13, 2008 at the Firestone Winery's Crossroads Estate. Our wedding was more beautiful and more amazing than we could have ever imagined. Here's the scoop on our vendors.

Photographer - Ian Grant (www.iangrantphotography.com or distinctphoto.com). Ian is out of Los Angeles (where we live too), but was eager to photograph our wedding even though it was a hike. He was the least expensive quality photographer we found. His portfolio was impressive, but the actual wedding day pictures he took blew us away and far exceeded our expectations. If anyone wants to see the pictures check out his website or e-mail Kelly (kellyangers@yahoo) or I (joseph_a_kaufman@yahoo.com). On top of taking great pictures, Ian and his wife Tanya were great to work with. I barely knew they were there on the day of the wedding (except for the posing pictures), and as a result we got tons of candid photos, which was what we wanted. Grade = A+
